On the site of an existing fire station, the City of Arcadia sought to build a facility that would house the existing fire station, and include the headquarters for the City’s fire department. A compressed site with existing trees, in an established neighborhood—and facing a busy street, became an opportunity for R/Hdo to create a strong landscape identity. This updated identity respected the surrounding neighborhood, yet was legible from the street. Masses of flowering shrubs add color and life to the narrow east frontage, while trees characteristic of the existing neighborhood establish a rhythm for the passing cars.
