Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach is a non-profit children’s hospital located on the campus of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in Long Beach, California. Miller Children’s provides specialized pediatric care for children and young adults, with conditions ranging from common to complex, including maternity care for expectant mothers—all under one roof. Miller Children’s is one of only eight free-standing children’s hospitals in California – treating more than 14,000 children each year – and has become a regional pediatric destination for more than 84,000 children who need specialized care.

The new facility required demolition of numerous older buildings and reorganizing the campus vehicular circulation and parking system to create a site for the new facility. R/Hdo’s work included the design of a new campus entrance and entry road, a 400-car surface parking lot, a new Chiller Plant, and temporary gardens on a site allocated for Phase 2 construction and Phase 1 of the Children’s Hospital.

The design of the Children’s Hospital created a highly visible landscape and entry along Atlantic Avenue, one of the major edges of the campus.
The design also integrated the new building with the existing drop-off and emergency room access, tying the building into the overall campus circulation system. R/Hdo recently assisted the hospital with the design of a “green roof” that provides both a visual amenity and stormwater management benefits.
